Nikon capture nx d manual5/2/2023 ![]() ![]() Would View NX-I suffice - if no further editing is required? Would that involve the process that you described above, but just not doing the edits?Īre you also saying that saving the final image totally relies on other software? So I take it that we can put unedited pics straight through to storage sooc? The overview of this Flickr site suggests we should post before and after pics to showcase NX-D effects in practice. Yes I will look at that as an option although I'm more likely to trust a physically present device. ![]() But I accept that Google will have considerable server redundancy, and is unlikely to go bust overnight. I prefer to have my backup totally under my own control - hence a second physical drive. Feel free to get back to me if necessary - I don't claim to be an expert, but will help if I can. I think that with these points in mind you will be able to establish a workflow that achieves what you want. NB At this point, your only library will exist on the external drive, which is why I recommend that you duplicate it - otherwise you don't have a backup. The laptop folders can then be deleted to free up space for future editing. You would then periodically move these 'keeper' folders from the laptop and onto the external drive. Once you have completed the local editing in your chosen software you can 'Save it' to your laptop in the normal way. Most importantly, the edited NEF file has to be converted to a TIFF in order to make this transfer - so you have to be sure that you are happy with your edited NEF before you make the transfer. In my case, I have a choice of the old Nikon CNX2 or Photoshop Elements 13. It has a white circle icon with 'App', and an arrow alongside. This is done using the 'Open with' command in the top right corner. It is purely a raw editor, and assumes that once you have extracted all possible 'raw goodness' from your NEF files, you will pass them on to some other software in order to make more detailed 'local' edits. It does not help with file transfer, and I don't bother with it.Īs you have found, CNX-D does not have a direct 'Save' function. View NX-i is essentially a file / folder browser that allows you to see a lot of images in the same place and sort them by applying 'ratings' to them. I have eliminated all of my reliance on cloud storage. I have quit recommending Flickr for such storage due to the high cost. If the cost of a second drive for a backup is a factor, you might consider storing photos in the cloud on a service like Google Photos. Using an external SSD is an excellent means of primary storage. Would it be advisable to download View NX-I as well or do they perform similar functions? Is View NX-I essential for shifting images to other places? There didnt seem to be an obvious way to transfer edited images to a storage destination but I may not have looked the hard enough. Not so much with the slow speed but iiwii. I am specially impressed with the real non-destructive edits. I recently installed NX-D on someone else's computer to do a test run and was impressed enough to pursue it for future PP. I now know I dont need to buy a new laptop with huge storage. More expensive, but no moving parts to fail - they are essentially a huge memory stick. ![]() For some years now I have been using the HDD versions of these drives, but I am considering changing to the SSD versions. You can get them, in various capacities, via Amazon. I currently use the Western Digital 'Passport' drives - they are about the size of a pocket diary and take their power from the data USB plugged into the computer - no messing with external adaptors and extra wires. I actually keep three copies, but that is very much a carry - over from when I was doing agency work, where loss of data would have been catastrophic. ![]() That gives you a backup in case one of the drives fails. Ideally, you should take this a step further and use TWO external drives and use the laptop to duplicate the images from one to the other. It's an excellent idea to have the software (NX-D) on your laptop and keep your library of photos on an external drive. I'm sorry if this is a basic question, maybe I'm the last person to the party but I can't find any info online. I'm hoping to avoid buying a laptop with massive storage by keeping external hdd solely to store and access the keepers. With the larger files accumulating I am wondering if it is possible to run NX-D on the laptop and keep the library separate on an external hard drive,?įrom what I am told, iPhoto will compress photos so there is not a problem with storage before tens of thousands of images will fill the internal drive. I'm looking at NX-D as an upgrade from iPhoto due to a new camera purchase. Hello all, I'm hoping this group is still live as there is not a lot of discussion recently. ![]()
